Thematic Experiments

Today I looked at the theme for this blog and thought it just wasn’t very inspired, so I played around with the options and thought it was getting less and less inspired as I dabbled.

I have since tried out at least 5 other themes. I finally settled on the one with the most color options. I guess I’m just too picky. It was a matter of trying them to see just how many options were available. I can’t really figure it out from the filter tags applied by the creators.

One theme allowed a custom by line–and that’s it! It was clean and straightforward, but the color just wasn’t me.

One theme was bold and graphic, but only allowed changing the header picture. And it was just TOO bold. Also, the format had multiple columns but they all clung to the left side of the window and left 1/3 of the screen empty–what a waste!

Others had more options, but one left some of the text in a light blue that only looked good with a few of the color options allowed. Another had automatic widget placement, and when I rearranged the widgets, the formatting changed.

And one had a one column/post format that left lots of whitespace under the really short posts and didn’t have a link for looking going directly to the previous posts.

I really liked another one. It allowed changing the size of the columns and custom picture size limits and the number of columns, but when I changed them so they were larger than the default my text didn’t all show up. And the layout distorted most of my images. I tried several things to adjust them, but no luck.

So I settle on the one that fills the screen with set size columns, but has 5 color options–and not just presets, complete custom colors. I  may have overdone it, though. Using a color scheme with 5 distinct colors probably isn’t the best idea, but I’ll play with it more before I give up and try another theme altogether!!

I suppose I should get out the ole reference books and learn how to code my own theme, but they say these sites are easy to click and go–ergo easy!

Oh well, I haven’t rearranged the living room furniture lately, maybe that’s what I should do next!

Installing WordPress on a Server

I decided that WordPress.com probably isn’t the best solution for me to build a business on.

I have been paying for space at 1 & 1 for several years. They offer WordPress software with the package, but I was unhappy with their offering of customization. Or rather their lack of customization.

They allow one to upload the entire software package for yourself into your space, but even with my technological skill I feared it would be difficult. If I tried and failed, I’d be mad at myself. But if I never tried, I’d never fail.

But I knew I couldn’t put it off any longer. I downloaded the latest copy from WordPress.Org.I made sure I had the MySQL database set up ready for the blog. I uploaded it to my shared server after experimenting with a couple of ftp (file transfer protocol) programs And set about customizing it.

I tried to make it harder! But even though I browsed through all settings and pages installed on my site, I didn’t find any thing that was difficult.

It was so easy, I was almost embarrassed that I waited so long. I searched for a theme to use and expected to have to download it and then upload it and discovered that the software linked directly to WordPress.org site to install the themes.

Of course that’s not all I need to do. But I succeeded so far better than I imagined.

I want to customize it totally. I found several themes that have features that I like, but none are completely what I want. So now I have to learn how to make it look just like I want.

I’m sure it will provide new fodder for me to write about.

Progress Report

Well, I did it. I decided on the topic for my site. Life has given me challenges and assets. Sometimes I think the assets I have are part of my challenges, but I know I have to use the assets I have or I won’t be able to truly live to my potential.

For now, the site is hosted here at WordPress.com:  livingleft.wordpress.com. I took the easy way to create it since anything else would have just been more procrastination. I will continue to work on the format and how to make a living from it, but I had to get started with the writing or I would be just another wanna-be.

I will keep this blog too. It will be about my technical travails and other miscellaneous thoughts.

FaNS on FaceBook

I created my first FaceBook group tonight. It’s for a group I belong to offline:  Family of Native Spirits (FaNS).  Our membership is of Native Americans and friends in and around the Quad Cities of Iowa & Illinois.

Our group chose this name because we want the idea of family to represent all we do. We want to show love and respect for everyone in our group and we welcome diversity in membership. We believe in living with a Native Spirit of respect for life in all forms and to respect and honor the history, culture, and traditions of the Native American peoples who reside in our vast country. We ask those who wish to join the group to share our mutual respect and love.

We are a new group for the area working to create our identity and build relationships with each other and the wider community.

Online Publishing Won Me Over

I always felt that since I could create my own website code, I should. If I took the easy way out and used an online site creator (even wordpress.com!) was selling out–being lazy. But I’ve given in and recognized that procrastination is so ingrained in my personality that I’d never get anything online at all unless I used the available tools.

It’s a website built for artists just to display their artwork. It also has the advantage of being a social network for artists. Members can connect to others who work on the same type of projects or for the same type of clients to or who share other interests to comment, critique, encourage, and share their experiences and ideas.

My initial portfolio is just some graphic design work I created in school, but it’s so easy, I’m sure I’ll post much more soon.

My Brain Needs Drugs

Those were the mantras of my life before I finally chose to visit a psychiatrist on my own as an adult. It’s still hard for the family to understand and accept, but now I have help. I take medicine daily to fight depression; and while I’m not exactly “perky,” I don’t dwell on my despair daily any more. But I still have those phrases rolling around in the back of my mind telling me it’s my fault that I don’t feel good. That I could just decide to feel different and I would. That somehow it’s my own failure to be happy that’s the problem. . . .
